The 4 Best Habit Tracking Methods for Building Sustainable Habits
I love my habits, but I’ll be honest—I hate tracking them. It’s tough enough remembering to stick to a new habit, let alone tracking it consistently. Can you relate? Or maybe habit tracking isn’t your favorite thing, but you know the benefits good habits can bring to your life.
If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place! Today, I’m going to share how I track my habits—despite not being a fan—and the huge benefits I’ve reaped from sticking with it.
Why Is Habit Tracking Important?
Let’s talk about why tracking habits is a game-changer. For me, it boils down to three key reasons:
1. Progress
2. Reflection
3. Confidence
1. Progress: The Power of Data
Tracking lets me see my progress in black and white—literally. There’s no guesswork, just simple “yes” or “no” data points. It’s a straightforward way to measure how far I’ve come. But, full disclosure, it’s not always motivating if you’ve fallen off track. And that leads us to reflection.
2. Reflection: More Than Just a Feeling
Our feelings can be misleading. Some days, I feel like I’m making zero progress—but when I look at the data, it tells a different story. Tracking gives you tangible information to reflect on, helping you assess what’s working and what’s not.
3. Confidence: Building Your Inner Strength
When I look back and see how many times I’ve shown up for myself, it gives me a confidence boost. There’s something empowering about seeing the number of repetitions you’ve built up. It’s a visual reminder that you’re making moves—even when it doesn’t always feel like it.
4 Habit Tracking Methods (That I’ve Actually Used)
If tracking feels like a chore, I get it. I’ve been there. So, let’s get practical. Here are four methods I’ve used to track my habits—some worked better than others, depending on where I was in life. Keep in mind that each one has its season. What doesn’t work today might be perfect for you in the future.
1. Pen and Paper: The Old-School Classic
There’s something satisfying about good ol’ pen and paper. It’s flexible and portable. If you’re into grids, headers, and neat layouts (like me!), a lined or gridded notepad can make tracking even more organized.
2. Excel or Google Sheets: The Template Lover’s Dream
Excel and Google Sheets offer easy-to-use templates, complete with automatic checkboxes. I loved using this method because I could duplicate my tracker easily—no need to recreate the wheel each time. Bonus: You can access these trackers on your phone, even when you’re offline!
3. Habit Tracking Apps: For the On-the-Go Habit Builder
With your phone in hand, habit tracking apps are super convenient. There are plenty to choose from, and they range from simple to complex. I don’t have a favorite app—most of the free versions work just fine for me. It’s really about what suits your needs best.
4. Calendar or Planner: My Secret Weapon for Consistency
This is my favorite method and the one I use every day. My life revolves around my calendar—it’s where I track everything, from meals to sleep. Adding habits to my calendar was a natural fit. Whether you’re a paper planner or digital calendar user, this method integrates smoothly into your routine. For me, it’s nearly automatic, which helps with my forgetfulness!
Bonus Tip: Adapt Your Habit Tracking to Your Life’s Seasons
I’ve shifted between these methods many times over the years. What worked for me during one stage of life might not work for me now, and that’s okay. Be flexible and choose the method that fits into your current routine.
